DUBAI: Dubai’s airport saw 22.6 percent growth in passenger traffic for February, versus the same month last year, driven by an increase in capacity through Western Europe, India and the Middle East routes.
The company attributed the increase to “a strong rampup of capacity” into the three regions by different carriers.
January saw record passenger traffic of over 3.8 million.
Cargo handled in February totaled 171,707 tons, up 26.7 percent from a year ago.
“Rising shippers’ confidence and the re-stocking of inventories worldwide is influencing freight volumes that are already buoyed by increasing economic activity, particularly in Asia,” the company said.
Chief Executive Paul Griffiths said in the statement he expected growth to continue throughout the year, helped with a pickup in economic activity globally, and Dubai’s flagship airline Emirates planning to launch new routes.
