Dubai has the fourth-busiest airport in the world in terms of international passenger traffic.

Dubai International AirportThe number of people taking flights to Dubai over the past six months has allowed the destination’s airport to handle a record number of passengers.

According to Dubai International Airport, 24.6 million travellers used the hub in the opening half of 2011, which represents a 8.9 per cent year-on-year rise.

Paul Griffiths, chief executive of Dubai Airports, highlighted how the organisation is poised to spend $7.8 billion expanding the facility and noted how well-timed this investment is.

“As the numbers clearly suggest, robust passenger traffic growth continues despite high fuel prices and growing economic uncertainty in Europe and the US,” said Mr Griffiths.

The airport’s latest figures mean it is the fourth-busiest facility of its type in the world, with more than 200 new weekly flights launched in the first half the year.

In 2008, the $4.5 billion Terminal 2 was opened, which was built exclusively for use by Emirates airline.
