Dubai International Airport is predicted to be busier than Heathrow by 2016.
Heathrow is operated by British Airport Authority (BAA) and an executive has admitted to 7DAYS that it is powerless to compete with Dubai’s growth.
BAA director of media and public relations Simon Baugh said: “Dubai’s a passenger transfer hub where the world connects.”
The UK’s busiest airport is currently in the middle of a political row, with the coalition government being against a proposal to build a third runway with Baugh stating that Heathrow will struggle to grow unless the UK government policy changes towards it as an airport hub.
On the other hand Dubai is expected to welcome approximately 90 million flyers by 2020 with Dubai International Airport set to mark the opening of Concourse 3.
Concourse 3 will open at the airport later this year and will be dedicated to the double-decker Airbus A380 aircraft. The emirate expects Al Maktoum International Airport to be the world’s largest passenger and cargo hub by 2027.
Last year Heathrow airport served a massive 69.5 million passengers in comparison to Dubai International Airport’s 50 million, however, the emirate predict that this will have changed by 2016. More info
