Dubai airport officials arrested a gang of Georgian nationals while they attempted to smuggle huge quantity of gold jewellery and valuable watches outside the country.
As part of plans to become a global logistics and transport hub, the emirate is building Al Maktoum international airport, set to be the world's largest with a capacity of up to 160 million passengers a year. The airport is part of a 140-square-kilometre transport hub or "aerotropolis" known as Dubai World Central.
Abdul Hamid Ahmad said Al Maktoum International Airport, besides the Jabal Ali Port, has been opened for cargo traffic. When fully commissioned in 2017, it is going to be shaped as the largest and most modern airport of the world, being land, sea and air center for logistics and transport. The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) said air traffic movements in the UAE hit a two-year high in November, increasing 6.9 per cent compared to the same month last year. The GCAA monthly report indicated that total air traffic movements in November 2010 were 56,654, with an average of 1,888 movements per day, which is the highest daily number of air traffic movements in the last two years.

He highlighted some of Dubai's major infrastructure projects that will enhance its status as a hub for the region including Dubai World Central; the Al Maktoum International Airport, the world's largest passenger and cargo hub; and The Dubai Logistics Corridor which will create the world's largest multi-modal logistics platform.
"Yes, we've started hiring people for the new airport. We have set up a small transition team to start operations at the airport and we will add more people as we go by. In the meantime, we are also internally moving people and promoting some who have done well in their existing role," said Paul Griffiths, chief executive in comments published by UAE daily Gulf News.
